Northern Rivers Disaster Adaptation Plan
Caring for Country and reducing impacts of future disasters
The NSW Reconstruction Authority is developing a disaster adaptation plan for the Northern Rivers region.
NSW Reconstruction Authority has engaged Jagun Alliance to work with First Nations communities to document ideas for inclusion in this regional plan.
What’s the plan about?
The Northern Rivers has some of the highest risk and impacts from natural hazards in NSW.
The Disaster Adaptation Plan focusses on 9 natural hazards:
This Plan is about prioritising and resourcing actions that help care for Country and reduce risk and impacts of future disasters on communities across the Northern Rivers.
Why we value your thoughts, experience and ideas
We'd like to hear your thoughts on what needs to happen to care for Country and reduce risks of future disasters.
For example, cultural fire, kinship networks, landscape and river restoration and other ideas that will help Country and communities be safer, grow stronger and recover faster from future disasters.
We also want to check in about the cultural considerations of the tools that have already been identified in the NSW State Disaster Mitigation Plan to reduce risk – how could these tools work better?
How can you be involved?
We will be holding targeted yarns with First Nations communities across the region.
You’re invited to share your thoughts through an online contribution.
Your ideas will help us to identify shared regional priorities and ideas for support, recognition and resourcing.
You choose what you share, and it will not be used to represent specific Country or provide consent for actions.
Access the online contribution package here.
You can also reach out to us with other ways you would like to be involved at ninawoods@jagunalliance.org.au.
What happens next?
Jagun Alliance will bring together common perspectives, ideas and priorities to NSW Reconstruction Authority to inform the Northern Rivers Disaster Adaptation Plan.
NSW Reconstruction Authority will check back in with a foundation Plan in the later half of 2026 to see if these themes and ideas have been considered appropriately.
NSW Reconstruction Authority will continue to build on these foundations and support First Nations perspectives in the continued development of the plan throughout 2027.
This project is funded by the NSW Government.
