First Nations Knowledge Sharing
Working Together for Healthy Country
Jagun Alliance, together with the NSW Reconstruction Authority, are collaborating with local First Nations peoples and communities to identify and map key environmental and seasonal indicators, stories and Knowledge about Healthy Country, climate change and disaster risks in this First Nations Knowledge Sharing project.
Why this matters
At Jagun Alliance, we deeply value the rich traditions, stories, and Knowledge that First Nations peoples hold, along with an understanding of how to care for Country. There is so much we can learn from Country – from the seasons and weather patterns to climate change insights – as we navigate recovery and prepare for the ongoing challenges of natural disasters in the Northern Rivers.
This project will support an effort to ensure knowledge is maintained to strengthen connections to Country, empower communities to respond to challenges, and reinforce the importance of Knowledge keeping for future generations.
What’s happening?
Together with First Nations peoples living across Bundjalung, Yaegl and northern parts of Gumbaynggirr lands, we’ll co-design resources to support communities in preparing for, responding to and recovering from disasters. These activities will also celebrate cultural practices and help maintain a strong connection to Country.
From January to June 2025, Jagun Alliance will come together with cultural advisors, leaders and community to gather seasonal indicators, stories and Knowledge to begin co-designing resources. We will connect with groups at broader community events and gatherings to continue to collecting indicators, stories and Knowledge, seek feedback and collaborate further on the co-design of resources.
Looking ahead
This project seeks to ensure the wisdom and Knowledge of local First Nations peoples supports community awareness and preparedness for future natural disasters and weather events.
The resources we create will reflect local landscapes and environments, offering a model for other First Nations communities to develop their own tools that fit their unique contexts.
