Activity 3 – Embark on a day of Nature- Rocky Creek Dam with Rous County Council Water
Gear up for an unforgettable adventure at the magnificent Rocky Creek Dam! Choose from five stunning walking trails that meander through this captivating reserve. Standing 27 meters high and perched 187 meters above sea level, the dam, holding an astounding 14,000 mega litres of water when full, is embraced by the lush landscapes of Nightcap National Park, Whian Whian State Forest, and revitalised farmlands.
This destination is a dream come true for nature enthusiasts and bird lovers!
When you arrive, you'll be hosted by Rous County Council Water staff, who will share intriguing insights about the dam, its catchment, and the challenges faced during extreme climate events. Discover the impressive results of Rous’ 40 years of rainforest regeneration and learn about their innovative Reconciliation Action Plan.
A shared morning tea will occur before you choose your own walk.
Please note there is no swimming on this adventure, the Dam and surrounding waterways are for our animal friends only.

The Water Walk
A 60-meter, wheelchair-accessible educational trail that takes you from the car park to a breathtaking lookout over the dam.
Water Dragon Walk
A 1.2 km return trail (approx. 20 minutes, easy) that hugs the water's edge, crosses the dam wall, climbs up to a lookout with views of the spillway, and circles back.
Platypus Walk
A 1.5 km trail (approx. 30 minutes, easy) that offers a relaxing stroll through lightly forested land, across a pontoon bridge over Rocky Creek, along an elevated boardwalk, through grassy glades, and back over the dam wall.
Cedar Walk
A 2.3 km trek (approx. 50 minutes, easy—though you might get your feet wet!) leading to the edge of the Rainforest Reserve, through various stages of forest regeneration, across Rocky Creek, the spillway, and dam wall, and past a small plantation of cabinet timbers.
Scrub Turkey Walk
A 6 km return journey (1.5 to 2 hours, medium difficulty) that ventures through the Rainforest Reserve, connects with other trails, crosses Rocky Creek, and delves into the Big Scrub rainforest of Nightcap National Park before reaching Catchment Forest Drive and returning across the spillway and dam wall.
The Big Scrub Loop
1.5km, approximately 45 minutes, moderate. Accessible from the Catchment Forest Drive - this walk takes you through a beautiful area of Big Scrub lowland, subtropical rainforest and small creeks.
